The establishment of Research Centre

Prof. Ranjan Chakraborti, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Vidyasagar University suggested to the Principal Dr. G.C.Bera to submit proposals for the establishment of Research Centre in Midnapore College where most of the teachers fulfil the eligibility criteria of being supervisiors for guiding Ph.D Scholars. Principal Bera took initiative in this regard and sent proposals to the University to expand further research possibilities which would enhance further the potentiality of teaching in this College. The proposal for the establishment of Midnapore College Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic (Pure & Applied) Science was submitted to Vidyasagar University and was approved in 2017. The reason for its establishment is a realization of the fact that each modern development in biology has its roots in basic sciences. In order to achieve its goal the centre has both scientists in basic and biological sciences as faculty members who are doing research in modern areas of sciences. Being an Interdisciplinary Research Centre the faculty members would be divided into self-selected research programmes in various thrust areas. The size of research programme will allow the centre to provide challenging research experiences of the students and researchers. Every effort will be made to integrate our educational programmes for both graduate and post graduate students. The research experience of faculty members will be brought to the classroom, giving students a sense of the excitement and the cutting edge nature of the discipline. In addition, the centrewould be committed to provide research facilities to researchers who are deprived of such facilities. The research grants brought by the faculty members are important insupporting research and training programmes of the centre. The faculty members are pursuing major and minor research projects funded by various National funding agencies and have published more than 200 research papers in peer reviewed national and international journals in last five years.

The Goal of the Research Centre:

The mission of Research Centre for multidisciplinary research work on science and technology is to carry out high quality interdisciplinary research, leading to technology development and competency building in various areas related to environmental problems and related areas, thereby providing solutions to Indian industry, medical professionals.

Objectives

  • To develop a new research product for efficient detection of environmental conditions including emissions/discharges .
  • To develop new catalysts and adsorbents for removal of contaminants in air, soil and water environments.
  • To utilize nanotechnology for synthesis of sensors, membranes, catalysts and adsorbents and other required materials.
  • To study the impact of environmental pollution on human health through Biological departments.
  • To develop specific micro-organisms for bio remediation of contaminants
  • To develop environment- friendly technologies for abatement of pollutants.
  • To promote environmental considerations in product-design and technology development in all fields of engineering
  • To establish a tripartite relationship between industry, academia and government agencies to nurture and support growth of environmental science and technology.

Apart from these particular objectives the research centre can provide following broad perspectives:

  • To promote interdisciplinary scientific research, advanced teaching and training in chosen areas of interdisciplinary basic sciences leading to M. Phil and Ph.D. degrees.
  • To provide a forum for interaction among scientists, research workers, teachers and students with National and International experts.
  • To provide research facilities to individual workers or research groups, especially to those who are deprived of such facilities for extended periods.
  • To create tenure –based short term and long term chairs and visiting positions for experts in identified areas for interaction with the centres’ faculty, carrying our research and exchange ideas; and
  • To conduct seminars, workshops, conferences and extension lectures to promote interdisciplinary research in basic sciences.

 Operational Aspects

All interested faculty members can participate in fulfilling the research objectives of the Centre. The participating faculty should obtain sponsored/consultancy projects on relevant areas from external agencies.

Student Research and Fellowship

The Centre actively supports research carried out by students. The faculty, research scholars (part time /full time) and post graduate students of theCollege working on projects of interest to the Centre will have full access to the facilities of the Centre. The Collegetries to provide special fellowships to students who will be working on their research work that are operational at the Centre.
