UGC Sponsored Spoken/ Communicative English Six-Month Certificate Course started from the year 2009. The then Principal Dr. Prabir Kumar Chakrbaorty proposed to the English Dept. to construct a language laboratory and teachers also of the Dept agreed. With the approval of the Governing Body Principal started the construction work of the Lab by tender call. It was completed in 2010. Principal along with other internal Governing Body Members inaugurated the lab that year. It is located in the Rabindra Bhavan (Thakbasta Building) on the ground floor in the room adjacent to the Department of English. It was maintained by the Dept. of English under the supervision of Dr. Amal Kanti Chakraborty, IQAC Co-Ordinator and Head, Dept of English and then Sri Rajendra Nath Dutta, Head, Dept of English also the IQAC Co- Ordinator became the Co- Ordinator of the Language Laboratory.
The Language Laboratory is furnished with 34 computers with separate desks. It is air conditioned. There is a monitor which the teacher-trainer uses to supervise over the lessons of the learners. A trainer is appointed to train and groom the learners properly through the computerization of study materials. Soft copies of Spoken English lessons, documentary films and important lectures have been purchased and by listening through head phones the students have become able to learn conversational English or Spoken English. Videos of the comics of Charlie Chaplin entertain the students a lot and they enhance their listening ability.
The Language Lab has more than forty books on Spoken English. Mention may be made of Cambridge English lessons / ELTS, Webster’s English, Better English Pronunciation by J.D.O’Connor, Remedial English Grammar by F.T. Wood, English Pronouncing Dictionary etc. The students often consult them for their enrichment and better performance.
The English Dept takes initiative to admit students of any streams of this College and applications more than intake capacity of 34 are submitted almost every year. The syllabus consists of 20 credits which includes theoretical classes, field works, mock presentation, computer based practical work, grooming, personality development, written test and viva. The classes are held without affecting the Honours and General class hours. After the completion of the course certificate is issued to the successful students.
The lab is sometimes used by other language departments like Bengali and Sanskrit. It is a proud possession of the College now which in every NAAC visit, has been appreciated by the Hon’ble Peer Team Members.
