The Department of History is one of the Departments which is entrusted with the approval of teaching Honours Courses during the early years of the post-Independence period. Earlier, study of history as a pass subject had started in 1940. It was upgraded to Honours Course in 1958. The Department along with the College had been under the affiliation of the University of Calcutta till 1985, when it came under the affiliation of the Vidyasagar University.  In 2014, the College was bestowed the status of Autonomous College under UGC scheme. The Department started its journey to teach Post-Graduate Course in 2015. The College has started a Research Centre of Humanities with the approval of and affiliation to Vidyasagar University.
